Climate and Weather was again our topic today in science. We went over the 'Sunny Days' lab we had on Friday of last week. We then talked about what would be on Friday's Climate and Weather Unit test. We discussed the Big Weather Questions in pairs and copied down the responses in our science notebook. What would a 5 response look like? Well a self scoring rubric was handed out so you could see what a 'solid' answer is. I am attaching that rubric below in case you misplaced it. All of the 9 questions should have responses when you come to class on Thursday for a review session. On the backside are sections that should be reviewed as well. Good luck preparing!

Green level is standard grade level, Blue level is the advanced level, and Black level is highly advanced. Today was a math day. We went over the PrOW (see the PrOW page for the solutions), the Unit 3 Review, and worked on the Pool Project. The math quiz is on Wednesday so it is important that the Unit 3 Review is complete before then. The solutions to that are currently on the board so they can be checked when finished. The Pool Project blueprints should be completed before Friday.

Today was a science day in which we had a lot of fun in the science lab. However, before we went in we discussed static electricity and how electrons flow through different items. After that we went into the lab and performed different demonstrations on a Van de Graaff generator. We saw aluminium foil fly off, some lightning strikes, and some crazy looking hair.
On Monday we have some math due. Thursday I gave some some Unit 3 Review questions. As I mentioned in class I want at least the first four problems completed. I will post answers to the qustions in class so they can be checked while we are working on the Pool Project on Monday. Remember we will have a Math Quiz on Wednesday. Monday we took the Measurement Pre-test in class. For homework we used the following worksheet about Currency Conversions. This is a great activity that shows how important knowing decimals are when it comes to MONEY.

Considering today is Monday and we have had a few absences last week and having a mentoring fieldtrip this week, today we covered a little bit of both math and science. In science we went a little off topic from matter and had a discussion on viruses, what they are, and how to avoid them. We also discussed Friday's lab. As far as math we collected and discussed the homework. There will be a science assessment on Friday (9-18-09) and a math test Monday (9-21-09). To prepare for the scince quiz, you may want to re-read the sections that were assigned, go over your illustrated dictionary, and go over notes.

Today we were in the science lab with a bunch of cool lab activities. In there we witnessed the distillation process, sublimation with dry ice, some cool observations with unknown objects as well as making a wierd substance from cornstarch and water! Today a few our classmates were out of class because they were not feeling well. We have a Math Decimals Test__ scheduled for Monday (9-14-09). However, if you missed a math lesson this week due to illness, I will arrange to have another test on Thursday (9-17-09) when we return from our mentoring trip. In class today we went over 'Rounding Off' on page 160 of your text book and then I assigned a 'Review Worksheet'. Welcome back from Spring Break! Today in math we did some catching up on fractions. I handed out PrOW 13 and we reviewed multiplication and division of fractions. On Wednesday we will go over percentages. Below I have attached the PrOW and Wednesday's math lesson for those really eager to start.

What a great Museum the sixth graders put together! A job well done, I really enjoyed the presentations also.

In science today we discussed our new unit on Weather and Climate. Text books were handed out and the assignment of reading the first few sections was assigned (p.6-21). The Illustrated dictionary was given out as well and will be due on Wednesday (3-17-10).

Last week I sent an email out to parents about upcoming units. We will be working on Fractions and Percents in math and Weather and Climate in science. See the attachments below. Also for math, in our quest for differentiation, we have developed three levels to keep our students challenged. Green level is standard grade level, Blue level is the advanced level, and Black level is highly advanced. As explained in class, please choose the homework assignment that best fits your current level. You may move from one level to another from lesson to lesson, but please complete the lesson first. Remember to show your work and check your answers. The answers are there for you to check your work.Enjoy.

It snowed today! I was concerned that some people would not have made it due to the icey conditions... we were all here; Excellent! Tomorrow we will begin our Energy Debates. Make sure you are ready. Questions to ask yourself, do you and your partner know what you will say in the presentation (everyone must share something), do you have 2-3 good questions for your opponent, and do you have good responses to your opponent's questions? It is Tuesday and a science day. Today we went over the new science project. I mentioned to the class that I would put the sample fact sheet for 'Biomass' up on this Wiki so you could see it. Hello. Today was a math day and we learned more about products, multiples, and factors. We will be having a quiz next week on these topics. To update you, we are in the second semester and we are starting a new unit in math (see attachment) and continuing in our science unit of energy and electricity. Today was a math day. We went over the PrOW (see the PrOW page for the solutions), the Unit 3 Review, and worked on the Pool Project. The math quiz is on Wednesday so it is important that the Unit 3 Review is complete before then. The solutions to that are currently on the board so they can be checked when finished. The Pool Project blueprints should be completed before Friday.

Today was a science day in which we had a lot of fun in the science lab. However, before we went in we discussed static electricity and how electrons flow through different items. After that we went into the lab and performed different demonstrations on a Van de Graaff generator. We saw aluminium foil fly off, some lightning strikes, and some crazy looking hair.
On Monday we have some math due. Thursday I gave some some Unit 3 Review questions. As I mentioned in class I want at least the first four problems completed. I will post answers to the qustions in class so they can be checked while we are working on the Pool Project on Monday. Remember we will have a Math Quiz on Wednesday. If you have any questions you can ask during class or even during Math Help on Tuesday after school.

I hope everybody enjoyed yesterday's 'Snow Day'! I know I did, in between making snow men and snow ball fights, I noticed some phase changes going on with the snow to water and then to ice today. Remeber science is every where... and so is math. Today in class we collected the last few days of homework as well as discussed our 'Matter and Density' posters that were due. We will continue presenting them and evaluate them on Friday. Tomorrow for math our PrOW#7 is due and we will be doing a 'Sneak Peek' for our next unit in math.

Today I returned the measurement test. The follow-up to this test is corrections on the form that was given out today as well as a parent signature. These corrections will be due on Tuesday Nov. 10. We are wrapping up our science unit on Matter and Density. We completed the lab assessment today using the King's Orbs and will take the Matter and Density Quiz tomorrow. Today we discussed more about our labs that we started on Thursday. We went further by proving in the lab the magic egg and and the densities of salt water, tap water and an egg. The completion of this lab is due on Wednesday. Please use your scientific reasoning skills to complete it.

For our science class today we compared our results from the density lab. Remember, always use a graduated cylinder for measuring and not a beaker. Then we discussed the density homework and compared results. Read those papers for your next quiz! After making observations on lava lamps and the magic egg you need to use some scientific reasoning to explain them. Again, SCIENTIFIC REASONING! 9-14-09 Math and Science
Considering today is Monday and we have had a few absences last week and having a mentoring fieldtrip this week, today we covered a little bit of both math and science. In science we went a little off topic from matter and had a discussion on viruses, what they are, and how to avoid them. We also discussed Friday's lab. As far as math we collected and discussed the homework. There will be a science assessment on Friday (9-18-09) and a math test Monday (9-21-09). To prepare for the scince quiz, you may want to re-read the sections that were assigned, go over your illustrated dictionary, and go over notes.

Today we were in the science lab with a bunch of cool lab activities. In there we witnessed the distillation process, sublimation with dry ice, some cool observations with unknown objects as well as making a wierd substance from cornstarch and water! If you were absent we will discuss the lab on Monday. If you were there but misplaced your lab sheet, get another one here.

Today a few our classmates were out of class because they were not feeling well. We have a Math Decimals Test__ scheduled for Monday (9-14-09). However, if you missed a math lesson this week due to illness, I will arrange to have another test on Thursday (9-17-09) when we return from our mentoring trip. In class today we went over 'Rounding Off' on page 160 of your text book and then I assigned a 'Review Worksheet'. Please complete it and check you answers with the solutions given or you can use a calculator. Also, the PrOW #3 is due on Monday as well (see 9-04-09).
